Nikola Tesla E-book collection

Image

Without Nikola Tesla, the world today would be a very different place. If even half of his inventions had been developed it would also be a very different place.

Here's a brief bit from his biography:

"Tesla's whole life seems unreal, as if he were a fabled creature of some Olympian world. A reporter, after writing a story of his discoveries and inventions, concluded, "His accomplishments seem like the dream of an intoxicated god."

It was Tesla's invention of the polyphase alternating current system that was directly responsible for harnessing Niagara Falls and opened the modern electrical superpower era in which electricity is transported for hundred of miles, to operate the tens of thousands of mass-production factories of industrial systems. Every one of the tall Martian-like towers of the electrical transmission lines that stalk across the earth, and whose wires carry electricity to distant cities, is a monument to Tesla; every powerhouse, every dynamo and every motor that drives every machine in the country is a monument to him.

Superseding himself, he discovered the secret of transmitting electrical power to the utmost ends of the earth without wires, and demonstrated his system by which useful amounts of power could be drawn from the earth anywhere merely by making a connection to the ground; he set the entire earth in electrical vibration with a generator which spouted lightning that rivaled the fiery artillery of the heavens. It was as a minor portion of this discovery that he created the modern radio system; he planned our broadcasting methods of today, forty years ago when others saw in wireless only the dot-dash messages that might save ships in distress.

He produced lamps of greater brilliance and economy than those in common use today; he invented the tube, fluorescent and wireless lamps which we now consider such up-to-the-minute developments; and he essayed to set the entire atmosphere of the earth aglow with his electric currents, to change our world into a single terrestrial lamp and to make the skies at night shine as does the sun by day.

British Armour in Action
Image
British Armour in Action (Armor 9) By Norm E. Harms, Steve Clayton
Publisher: Squadron/Signal Publications 1974 | 50 Pages | ASIN: B0006CGR3Q | PDF | 10 MB

In our present volume dealing with "British Armour In Action" we shall begin our discussion with the Battle of France and proceed to North Africa. The coverage of vehicles has been limited to those which appear in service by the time of the Battle of El Alamein. These limits cover almost one half of the Second World War period and were the most formative for the British tank forces who would later enter battle on the European continent.

The lessons learned in France and North Africa were done so from practical experience in contrast to book principles, though book principles had been tried in the beginning. One book which might have been of some assistance was the one being written in Poland and France by the German Panzer divisions. The engagements between British and Italian forces in North Africa could not be considered a sound basis to prepare future plans in handling armored formations. The down to business aspects of North Africa commenced with the arrival of the Desert Fox, Rommel.

British Tanks of WWII (1): France & Belgium 1944

British Tanks of WWII (1): France & Belgium 1944 (Armour at War 7027) By David Fletcher
Publisher: Concord Publication 2000 | 72 Pages | ASIN: B002L4KTO0 | PDF | 23 MB

From 1943 onwards life became increasingly difficult for the residents of southern England. The average civilian found greater restraints placed upon movement. Not only were security restrictions operating in some areas, military forces appeared to be moving about in increasing numbers. The closer to the coast you were the more difficult it became. From the flat, muddy creeks and inlets of Essex around to the rocky shores of Cornwall the country was infested by the military. Huge camps of soldiers, vast dumps of vehicles and always the endless movement, all building towards one incredible climax, the largest amphibious operation ever mounted.

In the west, in Dorset. Devon and Cornwall, this activity mostly involved the United States Armv. To the east, but focussed on the Portsmouth/Southampton area, it was British and Canadian troops that dominated. And all of this was taking place in a region of England that was within easy reach of enemy aircraft capable of mounting reconnaissance flights and bombing raids. Of course the German high command knew that invasion was in the wind and they knew that it could not be long delayed. They could not say precisely when it might occur, but worse still they had no idea where. The Germans occupied virtually every fool of coastline that faced Britain, from the northernmost part of Scandinavia to the western tip of France and in theory every fool was vulnerable to attack.

Panzer - Division 1935 - 1945 (1): The Early Years 1935-1941 (Armor At War 7033) By Robert Michulec
Publisher: Concord Publication 2000 | 74 Pages | ASIN: B002L4O950 | PDF | 16 MB

The first Panzer training unit. Kraftfahrlehrkommando Zossen. was formed on November I. 1933. Two years later, in August 1935. trial exercises for the first Panzer-Division were conducted in the German Army. At this time, based on theory, strength of the Division was 12.953 men with 4.025 wheeled and 4X1 tracked vehieles. This look plaee only five years after the development Kleintraktor. forerunner Of the P/.Kpfw.l. which was to become the first mass produced tank for the German Army. It would be important to stress, however, that German doctrine w as based on the concepts of armored warfare then being promoted by pioneers such as J.F.C. Fuller of Great Britain and Charles de Gaulle of France. In his memoirs. Guderian also credits the work of Ludwig von Eimannsberger, a leading Austrian tank expert, published in 1934.

Formation of the next two Pan/er-Pivisions followed quickly after, on October 15. 1935. Initially, men lor these units came from tile Kavallerie-Divisions. The choice of these divisions and not the Infanierie-Divisions. was logical and obvious. The new Panzer-Divisions were to act with speed, thus the cadres would best be formed with Kavallerie officers and NCOs. who were alrcad) trained to employ the same type of tactics. Meanwhile, in other armies, tanks would continue to be developed to support ir.fantrv as mobile artillery.

World War Two AFV's Armoured Fighting Vehicles & Self-Propelled Artillery
Image
World War Two AFV's Armoured Fighting Vehicles & Self-Propelled Artillery By George Forty
Publisher: Os Publishing 1996 | 207 Pages | ASIN: B000QRUV5Q | PDF | 41 MB

The Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV) played a major role in World War Two The Artillery found it necessary to mechanise some of its field pieces. Armoured Cars were called upon to carry out tasks in addition to reconnaissance. Tank Destroyers were designed to seek, and destroy enemy armour.

Add to this fascinating array such oddities as speedy oversnow Aerosans (armoured, fast sledges), deployed by the Red Army, to enormous seige guns weighing over 1(H) tons, to small remotely controlled and tracked demolition vehicles only six feet in length, to the massive and powerfully equipped armoured trains deployed by the Soviet Union and Germany.

The book contains over 300 photographs from such important collections as the Tank Museum, Bovington, England; the Panzer Museum, Minister, Germany and the Patton Museum of Cavalry & Armor, Fort Knox, USA. The colour sections are illustrated with many examples of rare AFVs, some are preserved in museums whilst others are in private collections, all carefully restored.

US Army Gun Heavy Motorized 280mm M65 Atomic Annie (Tankograd Technical Manual 6008) By Michael ( Ed. ) Franz
Publisher: Tankograd Publishing 2006 | 52 Pages | ASIN: B000Z1K8U6 | PDF | 76 MB

The history of the Atomic Cannon reaches back into World War II. In November 1944, the U.S. Army expressed the need for a heavy, mobile long-range artillery weapon for attacking enemy field fortifications or communication centers and for counterbattery fire on enemy long-range artillery. This requirement led to the initiation of development of the 240mm Gun Tl. In October 1946, the Chief of Ordnance assigned Watertown Arsenal the responsibility to develop the carriage and Waterfliet Arsenal the responsibility for development of the 240mm gun. The final design was approved in May 1947 and in 1950, two prototype 240mm guns had been completed and were tested at Aberdeen Proving Ground.

Soviet Tank Transporter in Detail: MAZ-537G with MAZ/ChMZAP-5247G Semitrailer By Jurjen Zuijdendorp
Publisher: Tankograd Publishing 2008 | 64 Pages | ASIN: B001B0Q1WE | PDF | 114 MB

The publication starts with a short historical background and a short technical overview of the MAZ 537G truck. Only one vehicle is used for the photographs and it would have been a nice addition if the author had included a short background of the vehicle itself. Only the caption on page 5 reveals some information that the shown truck is in Ukranian service. The overall photo quality is good but the larger photos, which show the entire vehicle, are a bit grainy. Examples are found on page 3 and 4 and it would have been nice if these photos were a bit sharper. The close up photos are good.

Schutzenpanzerwagen in Action

Schutzenpanzerwagen in Action (Armor 2) By Uwe Feist, Kurt Rieger
Publisher: Squadron/Signal Publications Inc 1972 | 52 Pages | ASIN: B0006W1K24 | PDF | 31 MB

Attempts to provide an armored vehicle capable of carrying men and their weapons into combat can be traced back to as early as 1918, when the British introduced the "Mark IX", a vehicle able to carry 54 men including a crew of four.

It was again left to the British to employ motorized infantry in combat and to prove the effectiveness of a combined force of AFV's closely supported by mobile infantry.

However, this successful campaign in Iraq in 1923, conducted under Lindsay, did little to alter the generally accepted French theory of the Twenties and early Thirties, thot the tank is an infantry-support weapon and as such has to odjust his speed to the walking pace of the attacking troops.
The tank once again was placed in a secondary role as an infantry-support weapon. This doctrine applied during the First World War, proved to be sufficient then, however, it would prove fatal for the French and British in 1940.

T-54 T-55 T-62

Verlinden Warmachines IDF Tiran T-54 T-55 T-62 By Michael Mass
Publisher: Verinden 1991 | 24 Pages | ISBN: 1930607024 | PDF | 17 MB

No other country in the modern world has taken advantage of enemy assets the way the Israeli Defense Force did. Ever since they fought the Arabs on various battle fields, the IDF was able to capture a huge number of different Armored Fighting Vehicles (including battle tanks) which they masterly modified for their own use.

Actually, their first fighting vehicles were taken from the British who saw a lot of their Bren carriers and armored scout cars confiscated by the Haganah (the forerunner of the IDF). The Egyptian army lost several of their T-34 tanks in the Sinai peninsula in October1956 in favor of the IDF, and hundreds of T-54, T-55 and T-62 battle tanks were captured during the 1967 Six-Day War, the 1973 Yom-Kippur war and the 1982 "Peace for Galilee'' Operation.

The first T-54 and T-55, still wearing Egyptian and Syrian markings, were conveyed on train flatbeds and heavy duty truck transporters to the IDF Ordnance Corps Depot for the first stage of standardization. This included a communication equipment update, storage modifications and above all the application of different painting and markings. These tanks entered IDF service as the TIRAN 4 (T-54) and TIRAN 5 (T-55), named after an island in the Red Sea, southeast of Eylat, Israels gateway to the Far East, in 1969, a second stage of modifications and improvements was implemented to the TIRAN fleet, not the least being the replacement of theioomm gun by the M68i05mm gun, manufactured by the Israeli Military Industries (IMI). This initially posed a problem because the gun (licence-built Vickers L7 gun of British origin) was designed to be loaded from the left side (like all western battle tanks) whereas the loader in the T-series is seated on the right. IMI was forced to redesign the gun and its loading system.
